Santorini or Thera is an island in the southern Aegean Sea. It is an island in the Cyclades group of islands. It is famous for its volcano and it is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc.The last volcanic activity was in 1950. Santorini and the islands Thirassia and Aspronisi are the remnants of the volcanic island Stroggyli.
The volcano's activity during historical times created the islets New Kameni and Palea Kameni in the caldera. The complex of Santorini also includes the islands of Christiana and the active submarine volcano, Kolumbo.
