According to legend, in the 4th century BC. the god Helios saved the people of Rhodes from a persistent siege by the Macedonian general Demetrius the Besieger. As an expression of gratitude to their patron god, the Rhodians erected the Colossus, a gigantic bronze statue, rising about 33 meters above its marble plinth, that is, it was two and a half times higher than the statue of Zeus at Olympia, the work of Pheidias.

The Colossus, incarnation of the Sun god, with his bronze complexion reflecting sunlight, must have impressed visitors as a convincing image of the god. As Philo of Byzantium observes, the sculptor Harris of Lindos had achieved the incredible, making his god a "real god". Harry, in essence, had created a "second sun", which faced the first".
