In Greek Mythology, the Argonautic expedition is the name given to the expedition of Jason and his crew from Iolkos to Colchis in the Black Sea to get the Golden Fleece, which allegorically expresses the second historical great colonization of the Greeks in the Black Sea. This expedition was named after Jason's ship, the Argo, which in turn was named after its builder, Argo. The crew was named after the ship and they were called Argonauts. The relief is made of copper gilded in a 24 carat gold solution and placed on an acrylic base.

After the Argonauts had assembled, Jason asked them to elect their leader. Everyone then turned to Hercules. He, however, nominated Jason as leader, since he had organized the trip. The rest of the Argonauts agreed to Heracles' proposal, and so the leadership of the campaign was entrusted to Jason.

The number of Argonauts mentioned in ancient Greek texts varies. Pindar mentions ten, Apollodorus the Athenian forty-eight, Apollonius the Rhodian, in the Argonauts, fifty-five, while other authors, sixty. Only twenty-eight of the following names are consistently found in all ancient Greek texts. The information on the capacity of Argos is also confusing. Other sources state that it was designed for fifty-five oarsmen, others for fifty (pentikontiris) and others for thirty.

Their journey began from their passage through Thrace, where they found the seer Phineas, who told them that they would pass through the Entwined Stones.
