Miaoulis was the nicknamed of Andreas Vokos who was a Greek admiral and politician. He was the commander of Greek naval forces during the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) against the Ottoman Empire.
He was born on the island of Hydra in 1765. He was a corn trader and gained a lot of money as a merchant. Being a merchant captain, he was chosen to lead the naval forces of the islands when they rose against the government of the Sultan. Miaoulis led the Greeks to victory over the Turks.
In 1822 Miaoulis was appointed admiral. He commanded an expedition in Chios. He was victorious at the Battle of Nauplia. Under his command he fought in many battles in Patra, Spetses, Samos, Geronda, Methoni and cavo Barba, while his contribution was great in carrying stores and reinforcements into Messolonghi.
Many of his personal belongings are exhibited in the Historical Archives Museum of Hydra on the island.
A big festival takes place every year the weekend closest to the 21st of June, called Miaoulia, in the island of Hydra to honor Admiral Miaoulis, one of the most important men of the Greek Revolution in 1821.
