Prehistoric finds show that they were originally inhabited by Pelasgians, Kares, Leleges and later by Dorians. As a means of exchange, the currency evolved into an artistic creation with impressed symbols, representations and inscriptions, information of culture, religion, language and public life, thus also highlighting the cultural level of publishing cities.

In its coinage, the coin was conceived in the late 7th century by the Minority Greeks and the Lydians. The silver coins of Kos appear in the 5th century BC. century and in front of the disc was recorded while on the back the cancer (crab). Signs and archaeological finds indicate a mint in Kos since the beginning of the 4th century BC. century.
