Metapontion staters. Ancient coin with an embossed ear of wheat. The coins of the Greek colonies in Lower Italy and Sicily were cut after the middle of the 6th cent. B.C. Their designs refer to the source of wealth from domestic production and sometimes the patron goddess of the publishing city. A typical example of the first category is the staters of Metapontion, one of the Achaean colonies, where an ear of wheat is depicted, showing thus the great cereal production of the region.

The ear of wheat is associated with the deities of agriculture. In ancient Greek culture, it is depicted in silver coins, indicating the increased cultivation of the area. The golden ear is the result of the union of the bright sun with the pure earth. In the Eleusinian mysteries, they offered the fruit of the wheat, symbolizing abundance.
