The stadion race, was a sport feature in the Ancient Olympic Games. In fact, it was the first and only sport until 728 B.C. Inspired by the performances of sports on black-figured vases, we created for you, a collection of wooden boxes with depictions of ancient sports and events of the Olympic Games. The ancient Olympic Games had several running events. Τhe "stadion" race was the oldest contest that took place in Ancient Olympia. Until the 13th Olympiad (728 B.C.) when the games lasted for only one day, the Olympics originally contained only the stadion or "stade" race, a short sprint whose length was determined at 600 feet (192.27m), that is one Stade.
The diaulos, or two-stade race, was introduced in 724 BC, during the 14th Olympic games. A third foot race, the dolichos, was introduced in 720 BC. The last running event added to the Olympic program was the hoplitodromos, or "Hoplite race", introduced in 520 BC and traditionally run as the last race of the Olympic Games. The runners would run either a single or double diaulos in full or partial armour, carrying a shield and additionally equipped either with greaves or a helmet.
