The turtle was used as a symbol in almost all the ancient cultures, including the greek culture. In Greek mythology, Chelone was a nymph or a mortal woman who was changed into a tortoise by the gods, for refusing to attend the wedding of Hera and Zeus.
Other versions of the myth tell that Chelone was taking too long to be ready for the feast, which caused Zeus to become angry. In retribution, he crashed her house over her, and thus condemned her to drag her house forever as a tortoise.
It is worth noting that the tortoise also appears in a different myth concerning Hermes. He was believed to have made the first harp from a tortoise's shell, by stretching strings on the concave side.
Also, in greek mythology, Apollo transformed into a turtle to approach Dryopi, who was the daughter of Dryops, king of Oeta, in order to make her fall in love with him.
In the coins of ancient Greece, the presence of the turtle was remarkable. The Aeginean "Turtles" was the first greek and european coin. These coins were widely accepted and used internationally, until the Peloponnesian War. At the front side of the coin was depicted a sea turtle, which was a symbol of Venus and the great naval power of the island.
