A sundial is a device that tells the time of day by the position of the Sun.There are many different kinds of solar clocks, such as the horizontal, the vertical, the equatorial etc. In the most common types of solar clocks, such as the horizontal and vertical, the Sun casts a shadow on a thin rod, or other object with a sharp tip or a straight edge, known as a gnomon, to a level where it is engraved the figure of hours.
Sundials are the oldest type of clocks. They were devised by the Chalcedonian around 2000 B.C. and then they started to be used in almost every civilization of the ancient world. The earliest sundials known, are the obelisks, dating to 3500 B.C. and the shadow clocks, dating to 1500 B.C., from ancient Egyptian astronomy and Babylonian astronomy.
