The signets / seals, were usually very small stones of various shapes with relief decoration or symbols and letters which served in the sealing of transported goods. Some kinds of seals were often worn as ornaments. They appeared from the Early Minoan period and were probably a form of protection against theft.

Seals were usually made of stone, while some were made of ivory and precious metals. The material of the seals and thedecoration they bore indicated the wealth and status of their owner and served as a signature.
