This is one of the most important preserved Christian monuments found in the Greek territory and even the largest in size. According to the tradition, the first building of this church was the work of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great who wanted to honor the desire of his mother, Saint Helena.

During the journey of the Saint Helen to the Holy Land, her ship was forced to flee to the port of Paros island, because of high seas. There, Saint Helen started praying to Virgin Mary and she made a vow that upon the completion of her journey to the Holy Land, she would build a magnificent church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The vow was fulfilled, when her son Constantine the Great, built a Basilica on the 4th century AD.

The original icon is kept at the Panagia Ekatontapyliani church in Paros. It is accompanied by a certificate of the Sacred Pilgrimage of Ekatontapyliani in the island of Paros in Greece.
