Τhe torch relay is directly connected with the Olympic flame, a symbol of the Olympic Games. The torch is the representation of the theft of fire from Zeus by Prometheus, its roots lie in ancient Greece, where a fire is kept alive during the Olympic Games. It returned during the Olympic Games in 1928, while the torch relay was introduced at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936.

The torch relay route in ancient Olympia was 2,500 meters and it was like the current relay race and it was added to entertain the crowds. The running events in the ancient Olympics were the diaulos, the stadion, the dolichos and the hoplitodromos. There was another foot race event that was called hippios.

Ancient vases and representations of the ancient Olympic sports are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
