Roses are best known as ornamental plants grown for their flowers in the garden and sometimes indoors. They have been also used as cut flowers and as scents of perfumes. Rose flowers are used as food, also usually as flavouring or to add their scent to food and drinks, because of their high vitamin C content. They also have minor medicinal uses. Many roses have been used in herbal and folk medicines.

Ornamental roses have been cultivated for thousands of years, with the earliest known cultivation, known to date from at least 500 B.C. in Mediterranean countries, Persia and China. In art, roses are a favored subject and they appear in portraits, illustrations, on stamps, as ornaments or as architectural elements.

The long cultural history of the rose has led to it being used often as a symbol. They have been long used as symbols in a number of societies, as ancient symbols of love and beauty. During the Classical Era, the rose was sacred to a number of goddesses. The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with the goddess of love, the Olympian Aphrodite and the Roman Venus. In Rome a wild rose would be placed on the door of a room where secret or confidential matters were discussed.

Medieval Christians identified the five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Roses also later came to be associated with the Virgin Mary. The red rose was eventually adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs. A bouquet of red roses, often used to show love, is used as a Valentine's Day gift in many countries.
