Weight lifting is one of the events in the modern Olympic Games. In ancient Olympia, it was an athletic event, that was used as an exercise for the athletes of the Pentathlon or the Pankration. We created a brass relief plaque for your home decoration, depicting the event of weight lifting, which we then placed on a greek black marble base, with white and grey waters. It is a sculpture, inspired by a depiction of the event on an ancient black-figure vase, dated to 500 B.C.

Weightlifting has its roots in ancient Greece. As a sport it was not included in the events of the ancient Olympic Games, but the athletes were competing in weight lifting. Probably, the weightlifting was a training event for athletes of the Pentathlon or the Pankration. In Olympia, a stone weighting 143.5 kg , is found. According to the inscription, it was an oblation of the athlete Bybon, who claimed, that he had pick up the rock, with one hand over his head. This stone certifies the existence of weightlifting in antiquity.
The relief of weightlifting is inspired by the original representation found in a cup, dating to 500 B.C., showing an Athenian youth, lifting two rough stones, one in each hand. The cup is kept in the Museum of Martin von Wagner in Germany.
