Rigas Velestinlis (Velestino, Magnesia, 1757 - Belgrade, June 24, 1798) was a Greek writer, politician, thinker and revolutionary. He is considered a national martyr and a precursor of the Greek Revolution of 1821. He was born in Velestino, Magnesia in 1757.

Influenced by the European Enlightenment, he believed deeply in the need for Greeks to come into contact with the new ideas that were sweeping Europe, and this prompted him to write or translate books into the vernacular and to compile the "Charter", a monumental map for the time, measuring 2.07 x 2.07 m, which consisted of individual sections. Two years later, Anthimos Gazis edited a new edition of the Map, smaller in size (1.04 x 1.02 m), with the title Geographical Map of Greece, but without mentioning Rigas' name in order to avoid Austro-Hungarian censorship.
