Latini sailing ship card case. We created a representation of a type of sailboat called "Latini". The design of the sailboat is inspired by a byzantine plate, dated to the 18th century from Canakkale. The representation is handmade of gold-plated 24K copper and placed on a acrylic case (plexiglass).

Latini is the triangular sail, that was used on small boats from the ancient times and later in the 9th century A.D. The boat Latini was named after the sail latini. These sails were mounted in a diagonal antenna, on the mast of the ships. The origin of the sail is not known, but is commonly believed that it was used by small ships that sailed in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean. The most likely version is that the Byzantines first took advantage of these sails in their large ships.
The Canakkale (Dardanelles) ceramics were made of red earthenware with light yellow glaze, and they date back to the late 18th century and the early 19th century. The plates came in various sizes with unique decorative patterns of ships, house and animals, painted usually in brown and placed at the center of the plates.
Byzantine dishes from Çanakkale (Dardanelles) are exhibited at the Museum of Byzantine culture in Thessaloniki and at the Benaki Museum and the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens.
