Bronze horse figurine on base. Votive figurines of horses and other animals from the 9th - 7th cent. B.C. Handmade casted in workshops from ancient cities, Olympia, Achaea, Argos, Peloponnese, Greece. They are typical samples of votives, which had a symbolic meaning. Wishing for wealth or inidcating the wealth and status of the owner. Handmade copy in solid brass with natural green patina.

Votive figurines of horses and cattle from the 9th cent. BC. probably from Achaea in Peloponese. They are typical samples of older votives, roughly worked, which had a symbolic meaning. From the Homeric epics we know that the possession of one or more horses, the breeding of which was particularly expensive, indicated aristocratic descent. The ox again, necessary for agricultural work and the transport of large loads, which were done by bullock carts, had become the basic unit of value measurement, while cattle were the largest and most expensive animals that the ancients ate and sacrificed to the gods. The effigies of animals therefore denote the wealth of the giver — or his wish to acquire it.
Propably from a Peloponesean workshop. Geometric period.
