The Feast of the Assumption of Mary around Greece!

Aug 7, 2014
by Lefteris Philippakis

On 15th of August each summer Orthodox Christians throughout the World, celebrate the Assumption. Especially in Greece, we celebrate the name day of Mary, Marios and Despina (Lady).

In Churches and Temples across the country as the Megalochari in Tinos, the Ekatontapyliani in Paros, the Panagia Sumela in Imathia and the Assumption Temple in Patmos, Christians in Greece celebrate this religious holiday, where traditions vary from place to place.

In Paros, at the Ekatontapiliani Church, the procession of the Epitaph takes place with the Icon of the Virgin. The festivities are completed with dances and local live music.

In Imathia, The Monastery of Panagia Sumela is flocked by Greeks of Pontian origin, to remind them of the homonymous church in Trabzon, which was destroyed.   It is a symbol of the 'lost homeland' and the displacement of Pontian Greeks , who used to celebrate for hundreds of years the Assumption in Panagia Sumela in Trabzon.

In Patmos, the Assumption is also celebrated with great devoutness in the historic Monastery of the Apocalypse, where the monks follow the custom of the Epitaph Mary, a custom of Byzantine origins. The gold epitaph of Mary wanders the streets of the island in a grand procession, while the bells of the monastery and other churches ring incessantly.

However, in Tinos there is a double festivity in this day. The importance of the celebration of the Assumption is enhanced by a National Tribute day. In August 15th 1940, Italy has torpedoed the Destroyer "Ellie", unofficially provoking Greece to enter the WWII. During that day, thousands of pilgrims arrive on the island to celebrate and to take part in the procession of the Miraculous Icon of Our Lady.

In Museum Masters.gr we have created some of our most beautiful products dedicated to this great celebration of Christianity all over the world. Amongst our handmade works of art a standout piece is the official reproduction of the Great Icon of Ekatontapyliani of Paros, and a detail of the center of a Liturgical Paten, depicting Virgin Mary holding Jesus, dating from the 1665, bearing an inscription of dedication. In our collection,  you can also find two special constantinato lucky coins in solid silver and in gold-plated 24K solid silver

Santorini, the island of contrasts

Santorini, the island of contrasts στο MuseumMasters.gr

Santorini or Thera or Stroggyli, as it used to be called, is the southernmost Cycladic island. It is actually a group of islands consisting of Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni. The island is most known because of its active volcano. It is probably the only volcano in the world, whose crater is in the sea. The eruption of the Santorini volcano, also referred to as the Minoan eruption of Thera, is allegedly the cause of the destruction of the Minoan Civilization.

The landscape of Thera, along with its archaeological sites Thera and Akrotiri, and the colorful beaches with the deep blue waters, that come in contrast with the little white houses turned the island into one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide.

The pop art colour beaches in shiny white, furious red or deep black sand, the volcanic rocks formed from volcanic eruptions and scattered around the island create an imaginative and cinematographic landscape for the visitor, unique to the world!

The location of the island, a junction of commerce and communication between Crete and mainland Greece as well as its volcanic soil have defined the exceptional cultural development from the antiquity up to now. The ancient settlement of Akrotiri was one of the major cities and ports of the Aegean Sea during the Middle and Late Bronze Age (20th-17th century BC). However it was completely disappeared by the great eruption of Thera and brought to the light again during the excavations, led by Professor Spyridon Marinatos.

The buildings of Akrotiri, or the Greek Pompeii as it is called, are a unique example of impressive architecture. Magnificent  frescoes decorate almost all the building complexes. The "Spring" fresco, as well as the “Saffron-Gatherers”, the “Potnia Theron” and  the “Antelopes”, are exquisite to the eye of the visitor. The “Boxing Boys” wall painting, the “Fisherman” fresco and "the Flotilla" wall painting are some of the oldest samples of monumental painting in the Hellenic world, which provide us with information about the history, the everyday and social life of Akrotiri inhabitants. They are also a living proof of the link to the Minoan Crete and other Greek islands, Continental Greece, as well as Egypt and Syria.

“Escape” to the beautiful beaches of Santorini, "dive" into the crystal waters of the Aegean Sea and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Visit Ancient Thera and the archaeological site of Akrotiri and admire one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. Walk through the narrow streets between the white houses of Caldera and try to find your own lost "Atlantis"

Ancient Greece "revived" in Chile’s metro station

Jul 9, 2014
by Lefteris Philippakis

Museum Masters: PankrationChile’s capital city has a wealth of galleries and museums highlighting the country’s rich cultural and historical traditions. But for those seeking a more unusual cultural experience, it’s best to head underground. For some years now, the Santiago Metro has been displaying public artwork at its subway stations through a program called MetroArte. Scattered throughout the city’s underground train network are 30 paintings and sculptures, bringing the daily grind to life in beautiful and often surprising ways.

In the Grecia metro station  there is an elaborate homage to ancient Greek civilization. The Réplicas del Friso del Partenón Griego (Replicas of the Frieze at the Greek Parthenon) is a series of 16 carvings in white cement. The ancient images mirror the etchings that were originally found on the west side of Athen’s Parthenon but have been housed in the British Museum since the 19th century. The replica friezes were created by the new Acropolis Museum in Athens and donated to the Santiago Metro two years ago.

The exhibition presents 23 carefully crafted replicas of gypsum, copper and silver, depicting the emblematic western culture issues such as democracy, justice and the arts. From the exhibits stand out a copy of the head of Homer, portraits of athletes, a statuette of a boxer and theatrical masks.

The donation of the Greek Ministry of Culture was an initiative of the Embassy of Chile in Greece and the Greek Embassy in Chile, and with the support of the Division of Cultural Relations of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foundation Gabriel and Maria Moustakis.

“The exhibition allows the passengers to come a little closer to the rich Greek culture, which was the cradle of great values which we respect until today, such as democracy and justice,” said Javier Pinto, executive director of the Cultural Society MetroArte.

Knossos, the mythical ancient city

Jun 20, 2014
by Lefteris Philippakis

Museum Masters: Bull Leaping, KnossosKnossos, is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and is considered Europe's oldest city. Located 5 km southeast of the city of Heraklion in Crete, it is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece as the Palace of Knossos was undoubtedly the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture.

Knossos was the seat of the legendary King Minos and the main centre of power in Crete. The Palace of Knossos is connected with famous myths, such as those of Daedalus and Icarus and the Labyrinth with the Minotaur.

The ruins of this majestic Palace are a source of world history and culture. The Palace was decorated with magnificent frescoes and continuous rows of spirals, dating back to 1600-1500 B.C. The murals depicted a variety of subjects performing scenes from the everyday life of the Cretans, such as the "Priest-King" or "the Prince with the lilies", which probably portrayed the Priest-King who lived in the Palace of Knossos.  The famous "Bull-Leaping" or the “Toreador Fresco” represented a sport that had a long tradition in the Minoan Crete.

Small scale sculpture art flourished in Crete as well, during this period of time. The famous "Goddesses of Snakes" from the Palace of Knossos, are some of the most important examples of this technique. These figurines, as well as the fresco of the "La Parisienne", depicting a stunning woman with big eyes, wavy hair and red lips, that was probably a priestess or a goddess, showed the luxurious and artful female clothing prevailing at that time in the Cretan society.

Visit the archaeological site of Knossos and see all the wonderful monuments of the largest and most brilliant centre of Minoan civilization. Walk along the ruins and feel all the exciting myths of Crete "come alive" in front of your eyes.
